When the match weekend starts with Chelsea vs. Manchester City, you know it’s a big one.

In one of the matches that is sure to factor in the Premier League title race this year, the two 2021 UEFA Champions League finalists meet at Stamford Bridge in an early season matchup that is sure to leave its mark. European champions Chelsea (1st, 13 points) are dominating the opposition and they have yet to concede a goal from open play this season. They host the defending Premier League champions Manchester City (5th, 10 points), who have already dropped valuable points at home to Southampton (0-0 draw) and their bid to repeat as champs will be dealt a serious blow should Pep Guardiola’s men lose.

Manchester United (2nd, 13 points) and Liverpool (3rd, 13 points) will be watching closely and hoping to take advantage of slip-ups by beating tricky-but-inferior midtable opponents on Matchday 6: Man United hosts up-and-coming Aston Villa (10th, 7 points), while Liverpool pays a visit to upstarts Brentford (9th, 8 points).

It’d be a lack of respect not to include Brighton & Hove Albion (4th, 12 points) in the top-of-the-table discussion. The Seagulls are in the prestigious fourth spot, and although no one expects them to be there at season’s end, it’s fun to see a new name in the elite places. We’ll see if they can keep up their run when they face Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace (14th, 5 points) in the lone Monday matchup.

Another club eager to climb up the table is Arsenal (13th, 6 points), which looks to be back on track with the return of several starters alongside its summer acquisitions. After two straight wins, the Gunners can now catch rivals Tottenham Hotspur (7th, 9 points) in the standings with a win in Sunday’s marquee London derby match.

At the bottom of the table, the matchup between Watford (11th, 6 points) and Newcastle United (18th, 2 points) has significant implications in the battle for Premier League survival. The two clubs are expected to be in the scrap to avoid the trapdoor, and these head-to-head points will loom large come May 2022.
